The Geotechnical teaching lab focuses on the students learning that laboratory measurements are used to obtain mechanical and physical properties of geotechnical materials for analysis and design.
Students work with materials such as soils, rocks, and aggregates. Soil identification through sieve analysis, hydrometers, and/or Atterberg limits are conducted by the students in the laboratory, along with soil mechanic tests such as: moisture-density compaction relationship test, direct shear, and consolidation. Specialized and specific laboratory equipment is used to conduct these geotechnical laboratory tests. Some of the equipment is electrically powered or requires pneumatic controls, or simply is performed manually. Primarily, all the geotechnical testing that is completed within the lab is considered destructive testing, but the students do not work with contaminated soil/aggregates.
The teaching lab provides the students with specific geotechnical lab tests such as direct shear, consolidation, atterberg limits, permeability; which gives the graduating student the essential experience and knowledge for them to utilize in their future careers. Thus, providing the Civil Engineering workplace with well rounded, well educated, laboratory experienced individuals.

The Hydraulics and Hydrology lab provides the infrastructure needed to teach student’s the complex behavior of water in different environments and under different conditions.
Student’s have access to varieties of flumes, pipe networks, pumps and simulators - giving them opportunities to visualize and measure water as it flows through the various apparatus. This lab creates a space to grasp the concepts learned and see flow characteristics in ways not possible in the field.

Undergraduate students in Civil and Architectural Engineering will have the opportunity to take various lab courses in the Structures, Materials, Fatigue, and Concrete labs. This includes Structure and Properties of Materials, Structural Concrete Design, and Rehabilitation of Structures. These labs are equipped with a wide range of testing and fabrication machinery for work in concrete, asphalt, metals, and woods.
These are working labs – apologies for the mess but graduate research is constantly underway. These spaces are rarely quiet!

The laboratory supports lab activities for the following Civil and Environmental courses: Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Engineering Principles, Physico-Chemical Processes, Biological Processes and Lab Analysis & Field Sampling Techniques.
The Water Chemistry lab presents the undergraduate student with the exposure to a laboratory environment equipped to provide for the testing of a variety of common/unique environmental chemistry parameters. The students will perform hands-on test method procedures to quantify common environmental parameters (water quality parameters).
The laboratory is equipped with analytical instrumentation to identify and quantify specific environmental parameters of interest.
The instruments within the lab include current GC-MS, ICP-OES, Anion IC, Cation IC, TOC analyzer as well as selective ion probes, spectrophotometers, respirometers, filtration manifolds, and more, which provide exposure, experience and knowledge of the tools used in their future careers.

The AEW is a general-purpose woodworking shop with the capability to produce everything from large structural members and assemblies to small scale architectural models and furniture pieces. The AEW works closely with AEMS – Architectural Engineering’s Maker Space to provide a wide range of equipment.
AEW is not a service shop, it is a teaching shop – anyone using the facility is expected to do their own work. AEW staff will help ensure users are trained in the safe use of the equipment but in most cases will not assist with fabrication work. The Engineering Machine Shop is available for contract work if needed.
As a teaching shop, our goal is to educate and instruct anyone who wants to learn – regardless of prior knowledge or ability.

With so much of today's design occurring digitally, it makes sense to have tools that can take information directly from the computer and turn it into a real object. The Architectural Engineering Maker Space, or AEMS, is a space built to do just that. Equipped with laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC machines and more, AEMS offers a diverse range of high-end digital fabrication equipment.
AEMS is available to all CEE undergraduate students.
