The University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE) in partnership with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) has established an Industrial Research Chair (IRC) in Risk-Based Life Cycle Management of Engineering Systems at the University of Waterloo. The research program, currently in it's second five year term, is chaired by Dr. Mahesh Pandey in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The chair program is one of the seven university professorships established by UNENE in Ontario.

Through the Research Excellence program of the Ontario Research Fund (ORF), the McGuinty government has invested $1.4 million to support the research program at the University of Waterloo.  Read the press release from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI).

The economic life cycle management of nuclear assets is a critical area of research for maintaining Canada's leading role in the development and application of nuclear technology. The research program is intended to enhance existing risk assessment and life cycle management capabilities and to provide industry with practical solutions for improving plant efficiency. The program will also create a pool of highly skilled scientists and engineers to satisfy the industry's demand for workforce renewal.

The long-term objectives of the research program are to:

  • advance the fundamental understanding of the probabilistic risk analysis techniques that are relevant to estimating reliability and maintaining life of safety-critical structures that affect plant service life;
  • develop methods, tools, and models for optimizing inspection, rehabilitation and replacement strategies that would result in economic life cycle performance and adequate safety of engineering systems;
  • develop principles of mechanics, material modelling, and computational methods relevant to quantitative risk assessment of large engineering systems; and
  • develop a general, plant-level risk management model that integrates engineering risk analysis with financial and operational risk management issues.
