Interdisciplinary Research Program in Water Treatment

The NSERC Industrial Research Chair in water treatment has been funded at the University of Waterloo for a fourth five-year period beginning January 1, 2008. The Chair involves an interdisciplinary research team and state-of-the-art laboratory and pilot plant facilities. Research projects are currently directed by the Chairholder Dr. Peter M. Huck. While the Chair is based in the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, it is also involved in collaborative research with individuals from other disciplines within the Faculties of Science and Engineering.

Graduate assistantships are available in 2012 for students with specific research interests in drinking water treatment engineering, chemistry and/or microbiology. Current areas include process design and optimization; biological treatment; newer treatment technologies (UV and membranes); identification, quantification and treatment options for pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting substances; particle and pathogen removal; and sources and identification of known and emerging pathogens in watersheds. Applications are welcomed from students with degrees in Civil and Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology and related areas. Students with non-engineering degrees may be required to take a small number of engineering courses to enhance their background.

Graduate Assistantships:

  • $16,500 per year (MASc)
  • $20,000 per year (PhD)

Students who have applied for, or hold, NSERC scholarships or post-doctoral fellowships are also encouraged to inquire at anytime about research opportunities within the program. Please note, at this time, all post-doc applicants must have their own funding and should have some microbiology experience.

Initial inquiries should be directed to:
