STRATFORD FESTIVAL

Stratford Festival

Although there is no official excursion for UIR Attendees to the Stratford Festival, this is one stop you will want to add to your sightseeing agenda! The following is a message from the Festival's Artistic Director:

A Season Fit for a King

This is a historic season for the Stratford Festival of Canada – in more ways than one. Under the overall title “The Making of a King,” we proudly present a three-play cycle of Shakespeare’s histories – Henry IV, Part 1, Falstaff (Henry IV, Part 2) and Henry V – that has never before been mounted in a single Festival season. While each of these plays stands alone as a masterpiece of exciting action, political intrigue and psychological insight, together they continue the sweeping epic saga that began with Richard II (presented in our 1999 season) and that will conclude, in our 50th season in 2002, with Henry VI and Richard III.

Our 2001 playbill also includes the premières of four new Canadian plays: Robertson Davies’s Tempest-Tost, adapted by Richard Rose; Timothy Findley’s The Trials of Ezra Pound; Dan Needles’s Wingfield on Ice; and Good Mother, by Stratford Festival company member Damien Atkins.

Add to this Shakespeare’s comedies The Merchant of Venice and Twelfth Night, Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, the brilliantly witty Private Lives of Noël Coward (born just a little over a century ago, in 1899), Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee courtroom drama Inherit the Wind and the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music, and you have a season fit not just for a king but for everyone who loves great theatre. I hope you will enjoy it!

Richard Monette, CM
Artistic Director, Stratford Festival
