Brief Bio

Tarek Hegazy, F. CSCE, Ph.D., P.Eng., M.S.E., B.Sc. is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Hegazy received an M.S.E. in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan (1986), and a Ph.D. from Concordia University (1993). He has held various professional and academic positions and participated in a wide spectrum of new/rehabilitation projects. His experience includes project planning and control, asset management and project management consultation, software development, and training. Dr. Hegazy is the sole author of the textbook "Computer-Based Construction Project Management" published by prentice Hall in 2002. Dr. Hegazy is internationally renowned for his research on Computational tools for Asset management and Construction Project Management. He is the author of over 200 technical publications in journals and conference proceedings. His research uses tools of computational intelligence to efficiently plan and execute municipal infrastructure programs and support contractors’ decisions on high risk and constrained projects. He graduated 21 Ph.D. and 26 Master’s students. Dr. Hegazy collaborates with many universities worldwide and received several awards of excellence in research. In 2020, he received the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering Prestigious Award, Steven G. Revay best paper award. In 2004, he has been acknowledged as one of the world’s top five contributing authors to ASCE construction research (ranked third in the period 1997-2002), as reported in a recent article analyzing trends in construction research (Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, American Society of Civil Engineers, Vol. 130, No. 3, 2004, page 437). In 2011, Dr. Hegazy received a best paper award from the Journal of Management in Engineering, ASCE and top cited paper award from the Advanced Engineering Informatics Journal. He has consulted and advised a number of contractors and government organizations in Canada. He is the founder of OPTEAM Technologies Inc. (www.opteam.ai).

Aug. 2001 – Present President and founder of OPTEAM Inc (www.opteam1.com) , a Waterloo-based company providing construction management consultation and developing computer software programs to the construction industry. Duties included project management tasks and and coordinating the development and marketing of computer software programs, including (BAL), (EasyPlan), and (EasyAsset) software systems.

Duties included project management tasks and and coordinating the development and marketing of computer software programs, including a Bid Analysis Software (ProBID).

Oct. 1982 - Aug. 1988 Civil Engineer - Suez Canal Research Centre, Suez Canal Authority, Ismailia, Egypt. Duties included full responsibility of the Building Construction Division, involving a wide range of consulting work on methods of construction, field and laboratory quality control tasks, rehabilitation for constructed facilities, building materials, and constructability aspects for a wide spectrum of engineering projects including buildings, highways, and offshore structures.

1978, 1979 and 1980 Trainee for 4 months in each year, Civil Engineering Department, Penta Ocean Construction Co. Ltd. (Japanese Company) during the project of widening and deepening of the Suez Canal, Egypt.
