Waterloo began as a co-operative science and engineering university with a real-world orientation. The result was an openness to new ideas and a collaborative approach that has made Waterloo one of Canada's most important research universities, committed to both fundamental and applied research.
Our professors and students have been highly successful in gaining sponsored funding from granting agencies such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). And the collaborative approach has given rise to over 100 research-oriented groups collectively, a vast source of experience and opportunity for graduate students at Waterloo.
The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department's focus on research is second only to it's focus on teaching. Research allows us to constantly improve and learn within our chosen fields and it is the foundation of our graduate program.
