We offer 51 graduate degree programs: 29 at both the doctoral and the master's level, and 22 as stand-alone master's programs. Our reputation for excellence and innovation gives our graduates an edge in a competitive world. Many have gone on to promising careers in business and industry, in government, and in major universities in Canada and around the world.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers academic programs leading to the degrees of Master of Engineering (MEng), Master of Applied Science (MASc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). At present, there are four major areas of study in which specialization may be undertaken:

A more detailed description of the individual degree programs is provided in the Graduate Studies Calendar.

Master of Engineering (MEng)

The Master of Engineering may be taken by full-time students or those who wish to study on a part-time basis while remaining in full-time employment external to the University.

Students in the MEng program must successfully complete at least eight(8) graduate level courses (500, 600 or 700 series) and one(1) technical/professional writing course. Courses are normally taken from available courses given by the Faculty of Engineering and usually by the Department of Civil Engineering. A maximum of two (2) 500 level courses may be counted for credit. The candidate must obtain a pass in all courses credited to his or her program, with a minimum overall average of 70% (a grade of less than 65% in any course counts as a failure (F) and at least half of the courses used for credit must normally be Faculty of Engineering courses.

Students in the MEng program do not have a research supervisor and are generally not eligible to receive financial support from the university.  Visa students are not accepted into our MEng program.

Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Students in the MASc program must successfully complete at least four(4) graduate level courses (500, 600 or 700 series), a thesis, and a seminar in defense of the thesis. The student and supervisor(s) arrange the course program and research topic. Courses are normally taken from available courses given by the Faculty of Engineering and usually by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Only one 500 level course can be counted for credit.

The MASc Thesis is expected to define a substantial research problem, provide a comprehensive review of the literature in the research problem area, describe the theoretical, analytical and experimental solution and provide a comprehensive set of conclusions and recommendations.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers an academic program leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Students in the PhD program must successfully complete at least three(3) graduate level courses (600 or 700) series, a comprehensive examination held normally within the first four terms of the program, a research thesis and an oral examination in defense of the thesis. The student and the supervisor(s) arrange the course program and research topic.

A PhD degree is awarded to a candidate who has successfully completed a program of advanced study and conducted original research. The program of research and the thesis must demonstrate a critical awareness and understanding of the literature in the research field, exhibit a capability of defining original and useful research problems and a capability of independent thought in solving a research problem.
