*Paste copy of Geo Tech when i finish with it!?!*

*NOTE: *Need Gaphics here! Check out geo poster. **Links confusing! I am not sure where to link Undergrad and Grad to? Undergrad and Grad buttons on geo tech page and just have a link to this page in Teaching.

What is Geological Engineering?

Geological Engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the earth. A geological engineer can work in a number of different professional environments that include petroleum, civil or mining engineering, groundwater, geology, waste management, exploration for natural resources, and any endeavor where an understanding of the behavior of earth materials is essential. Geological Engineering is one of the oldest engineering professions and has roots in mining and civil engineering as well as geology.

Areas of Study

There are a wide variety of areas that can be pursued in the Geological engineering program at Waterloo:

bulletRock Mechanics and Geotechnical Design
bulletHydrolgeology/Groundwater
bulletPetroleum and Mineral Extraction
bulletGeophysics

Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Design:

The design and construction of structures that rest on, or are made from soils and rock such that as earthen dams, subsurface waste disposal sites, and rock excavations.

Hydrology/Groundwater:

The study of the transport of water and contaminants through soil and rock, and the environmental analysis of water resources.  This is the field experiening the most growth here at Waterloo.

Petroleum and Mineral Extraction:

The location, and environmentally responsible removal of mineral deposits.

Geophysics:

The use of indirect analytical methods to determine subsurface properties.

Is Geological Engineering Right For You?

Geological Engineering is one of the most applied programs at the University of Waterloo.  It combines aspects of design and field work.(*picture link here*) Geological Engineers are hands on people, they can solve problems in the office and and put the solutions to work in the field.

Some Geological Engineers find themselves working all over the world,   (*picture*) you never know where your degree might take you. Often people are drawn to Geological Engineering for the adventure.

Students interested in working with the earth, with strengths in applied sciences, math and computers are successful in the Geological Engineering progrm.

It you think you are up to the chalanges that we face everyday, interacting with our planet and our environment then Geological Engineering is for you.
