The biggest set of this week's show was devoted to Stephin Merrit the man behind such projects as the Magnetic Fields, Future Bible Heroes and the Sixths, whom Michelle and I went to see in Toronto the Monday before the show (with Derek and Sari). Even though I only recognized one song all night it was the best concert I've seen in a while for some of the following reasons: Lee's Palace is a good venue, they didn't turn the music up too loud, you could understand everything Merrit said, nobody in the audience was talking and Merrit just writes really good songs. I've only really enjoyed two other concerts when I wasn't famillar with the music: Spirit of the West the first time they played the Bombshelter and Jerry Jerry when I saw him at the Hoodoo Lounge in Kitchener. Anybody else have a positive experience with bands they wern't that familiar with? Next week I'll be joined by David Kreller for the show.
