Upcoming Workshops

CATT, in partnership with  OGRA, will present 2 courses designed to show how to use trenchless construction techniques to construct and renovate wastewater collection networks and water distribution networks while saving millions of dollars. For more details, check out OGRA website.

February 08, 2012: Introduction to Wastewater Pipelines', Construction, Condition Assessment & Renovation using Trenchless Construction Methods

February 9, 2012: Introduction to Potable Water Pipelines' Construction, Condition Assessment, and Renovation using Trenchless Construction Methods

Other workshops

February 22, 2012: CIPP Design & Construction
Cured‐In‐Place‐Pipe (CIPP) renovation has been an effective trenchless pipeline rehabilitation method in Canada since the late 1980’s. Over the years CIPP is one of the most widely used and accepted trenchless pipeline rehabilitation methods for storm, waste water and more recently water distribution pipelines. (details)

March 22, 2012: Trenchless Technology Pilot Projects 2011
Presenters will reveal results and lessons learned from leading edge technology pilot projects and applications in water and wastewater trenchless technologies. More details coming.

April 3, 2012: Subsurface Utility Engineering
SUE helps in reducing unforeseen conflicts with exiting utilities and thus reduces delays in construction schedules and project costs. Additionally, SUE tends to eliminate public inconveniences by avoiding damage to existing buried utilities. This hands-on workshop will provide an overview of various SUE technologies for accurately identifying subsurface utility information. The participants will get an opportunity to see and experience the latest tools and equipment to acquire and manage quality underground information to avoid conflicts with existing utilities. More details coming.

April 4, 2012: Horizontal Directional Drilling – Design of Steel and Plastic Pipelines
If you have been are going to be involved with the design, construction and or inspection of a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) project you will want to attend this one day workshop that covers the HDD pipeline design process from planning, drilled path design, product pipe load verification (operational and installation loads), bore construction planning, risk analysis and evaluation, and equipment/tooling selection. ASTM F1962, the Plastic Pipe Institute and PRCI pipe design methods will also be discussed. HDD design and quality assurance and quality control tools such as BoreAid” and the new “PPI Boreaid” will be used throughout the workshop to demonstrate how to complete a successful HDD project. (details)

Attendees to all CATT workshops are eligible to CEUs!

TRS/UIR 2012

Scotiabank Convention Center
6380 Fallsview Blvd
Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

June 5-6, 2012

The Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies (CATT) along with Benjamin Media is organizing the Underground Infrastructure Research (UIR) International Conference and Trenchless Technology Road Show 2012” - Municipal, Industrial and Environmental Applications, in Niagara Falls, Canada. For details, please visit:

http://www.civil.uwaterloo.ca/catt/TrenchlessRoadshow2012/roadshow.htm.

This International Conference and Trenchless Technology Road Show will serve as a stimulating forum for the integration of practice, research and education in pipeline and tunnelling engineering and will provide an unprecedented opportunity to review state-of-the-art practices and research advances. This will be accomplished by bringing together buried infrastructure researchers and leading practitioners from around the globe to discuss and share ideas on municipal buried infrastructure construction, repair, renovation, condition assessment, asset management, financing and education. Original research articles that encompass the latest research and developments related to trenchless topics will be peer reviewed and published in a special issue of Elsevier’s journal Tunneling and Underground Space Technology (TUST).

The two day event will have keynote presentations, panel discussions, technical sessions, workshops, short courses, student activities and trade show exhibits.

A highlight and unique characteristic of this event is that it will feature State-of-the-Art and Practice Distinguished Lectures on pipeline and tunnel engineering. The topics of these outstanding lectures and the speakers are largely selected by an International Academic Technical Committee in collaboration with the Organizing Committee.

Sustainable Municipal Pipelines Newsletter

The first issue of Sustainable Municipal Pipelines was published in October 2011.CATT is excited to announce that the next issue is scheduled to be published March 2012.

The objectives of this publication are to provide information on new and innovative industry trends and products, local/international projects, and CATT activities and events such as workshops, courses, seminars, new members, conferences and research.

We invite submission of articles on:

  • any water and wastewater buried infrastructure construction, renovation, condition assessment and/or buried infrastructure asset management
  • new products and materials,
  • ongoing or recently completed successful projects
  • ongoing project information that includes information such as: construction start  and completion date,  contractor, consultant, owner, location and a short project overview.
  • upcoming projects or tenders.
  • HDD and Construction
  • CIPP Inspection
  • Pipe materials
  • Upcoming projects or tenders

Strategies for Sustainable Management of Water and Wastewater Networks

Congratulations to Drs. Andre Unger, Mark Knight, Carl Haas, Edward Sudicky on the awarding of their NSERC Collaborative Research Development proposal titled Optimal Strategies for the Financially Sustainable Management of Drinking-Water and Wastewater Networks.
Dr Unger says “this research will allow for the funding of graduate students, undergraduate student and Post Doctoral fellows over the next three years to continue the development of new and innovative buried  infrastructure tools than can be used by cities, towns and municipalities to develop sustainable management practices that take into account the strong and complex interactions between the water and wastewater distribution networks infrastructure, finance, consumers and politicians”.
The main objective of this project is to contribute to the knowledge-base required to implement MOE’s financially sustainable drinking-water and wastewater system legislation, with a specific focus on the City of Waterloo, City of Cambridge and City of Niagara Falls all of whom are cash and in-kind research partners.  The researchers would also like to thank Chris Macey at AECOM, and CATT for support of this research project.
The outcome of the applicants’ research is to develop software that integrates hydrologic, strategic planning, and pipeline condition assessment, repair and renovation, performance control and optimization into a single asset management system (AMS), that will enables municipalities to comply with MOE’s financially sustainable drinking-water and wastewater system legislation and more. This asset management system will then be tested by the cities as a pilot.
It will also assist with ongoing research on the cost to construction, repair, renovate and finance infrastructure renewal over the long-term. Dr Knight says “we are excite to continue to work with the City’s of Waterloo, Cambridge and Niagara Falls to develop tools that they need. This is a real win-win for all as we get real data to work on, funding to develop high qualified personnel to advance the industry and the city’s get the use of these amazing student to help them analyze their network data and to develop tools they need at a very low cost. The Centre for Advancement of trenchless Technologies is also please assist the research by assisting with the management and organization of the project.
Please feel free to contact CATT, Dr Knight or Dr Unger should you wish to find out more on this project or you are a municipality interested in the pilots and/or future research projects.
