Welcome to the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department at
the University of Waterloo. Our department is home to the Civil,
Environmental and Geological Engineering programs and is one of the largest
civil and environmental engineering departments in Canada. All of our
undergraduate programs are based on a co-operative education system which we
feel offers the best mix of educational knowledge and practical experience.
The six co-operative work terms can even go a long way in financing your
university education; in fact many students graduate with no debt at all.
Civil Engineering is one of the most diverse fields of engineering and
graduates are involved in everything from structural design and traffic
engineering to water supply and geotechnical investigations. The diversity
of our civil engineering program allows you to specialize in any area you
choose. In response to changing societal needs and employer demands the
Environmental Engineering program was a natural outgrowth from our civil
engineering program. Our Environmental Engineering program integrates the
sustainable development philosophy into the principles of water management
and treatment, solid waste management, remediation of surface water and
groundwater systems, biotechnology, and contaminant transport. The
Geological Engineering program allows students to develop technical skills
so they can be involved in a wide range of activities including the
development of natural resources, the engineering safety of major
infrastructure, and the assessment of geohazard risk. This interdisciplinary
program is a joint effort with the Department of Earth and Environmental
Sciences.
Our professors are recognized as leaders in their fields and this ensures
that you will have access to the latest developments in your chosen area of
specialization as well as a solid basis in the engineering fundamentals.
This outstanding research portfolio is enhanced by three Canada Research
Chairs and two Industrial Research Chairs who are eminent leaders in their
research fields. We have leading edge research programs in both traditional
and emerging areas. Our MASc and PhD graduate programs attract the very best
students from around the world to join the CEE faculty to work on industry
or government funded research projects. Our MEng program will be of interest to those who are looking to up-grade their technical background.
In the Fall of 2011, we will be offering our recognized high quality civil engineering program in the United Arab Emirates for the third year. Our experienced CEE professors from the Canadian campus teach students at the UW-UAE campus for the first two years and then the students will complete their final two years of study at the Canadian campus.
I look forward to the many exciting opportunities that lie ahead as we
continue to build the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the
University of Waterloo. If you are interested in studying in the CEE
department I suggest you explore our website and contact us for additional
information. If you are distinguished alumni we would like to hear your
comments, suggestions or reflections.
Best Wishes,

Neil R. Thomson, PhD, PEng
CEE Chair and Professor
